Clonard Girl Guides learn about Biodiversity, and build an Ant Hotel at Redmond Park!

As part of National Biodiversity Week, girls from Clonard Girl Guides, were in Redmond Park this beautiful sunny Saturday morning ( May 25th ) where they met Cliona Connolly, Environment Officer with Wexford County Council, and volunteers from Wexford Tidy Towns.

Cliona shared her vast knowledge of biodiversity with them and showed them how to build an Ant Hotel, plant seeds in diverse places, and many other related activities. I think it’s safe to say that a new generation of biodiversity-aware citizens will be continuing the good work in years to come.

Biodiversity Day Walk

34 people took part in the Wexford Naturalists’ Field Club’s Biodiversity Day walk around part of Wexford town. The highlight of the walk was the discovery, by one of our members, of a Swift nest in the wall at the front of the Borough Co. buildings. Now that we know that swifts are nesting in the vicinity the swift nest boxes, erected on the Old Jail, may be occupied sooner rather than later.

Celebrate EU Neighbours’ Day this Friday at Redmond Park

neighboursday The Love Redmond Park group invites you to join them in Redmond Park on Friday next (May 31) at 10.30am for a complimentary cuppa and a chat. The occasion is EU Neighbours’ Day, an event which is celebrated by people all over Europe. The raison d’etre of Neighbours Day is a simple one: get to know your neighbour. Why? Well if for no other reason than “the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know”! On a more serious level a strong community spirit is only as good as the links between individuals in the community. All it takes is a little more friendly communication and a willingness to lend a helping hand when its needed. Maybe think of your neighbourhood as an army and apply the maxim from Aesop’s Fables: “United we stand, divided we fall”!

This year’s Neighbours’ Day event will be officially launched by The Mayor, Councillor Jim Allen while local historian and writer Liam Gaul is this year’s guest speaker. As author of the recently published “Wexford: The American Connection” Liam will focus, in his talk, on our links with the USA.

Wexford walks explore the town’s natural side

wexfordwalkbioweekJust in case you didn’t know, today is International Day for Biological Diversity. The purpose of the day is to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. Wexford was not found wanting in celebrating the day thanks to our friends in the Wexford Naturalists Field Club. There is nothing they like better than delving into and singing the praises of the county’s rich natural heritage. To honour the occasion WNFC lined up Dave Daly, Zoë Devlin, Alan McGuire and Chris Wilson to lead guided walks exploring the natural history of Wexford Town. The walks (there were two groups) took in the old town walls, the graveyards, Selskar Abbey, the back lanes, the quays, the old jail on Hill Street (swift boxes), and the skies above us. To cap it all the weather this evening was glorious. What better way to spend a Summer evening.

“Neither wild nor manicured!”

Next Saturday morning (May 25th) Clonard Girl Guides along with a group from the Wexford Christian Fellowship undertake a very worthwhile project in Redmond Park. The wild meadow at the top of the park was described by the Tidy Towns’ judges in their 2012 report as being “neither wild nor manicured”! That’s about to change. Under the watchful eye of Clíona Connolly this work party will begin the process of turning this area into a genuinely wild meadow.
