Redmond Park will be getting even more brownie points on the green front when they start composting leaves from this Autumn. The plan is to install some composting bays in the fenced off area in the corner of the park. Leaves will be collected from throughout the municipal area and brought here for composting. With proper handling the leaves will break down to give a lovely, nutritious compost. Up to now all leaves collected have gone to landfill with all the expense that incurs. The local authority will also save money at the other end in that they will not have to buy in compost. The project is a joint effort between Wexford Borough Council and Wexford Tidy Towns (Biodiversity Committee).

Weathershield orders placed by retailers on the night or between 26th July to 17th August will received a special discount in Traynors for this period. Traynors will be the point of contact for any sales enquiries or requests for information.
Madeleine Quirke CEO Wexford Chamber said ‘This (project) will mark the continuation of the town’s rejuvenation plan to encourage tourism and enterprise. Tidy Towns and Wexford in Bloom continue to bring great improvement and colour to Wexford Town and with everybody making an extra effort, Wexford Town will achieve further success in future Tidy Towns Competitions. Your shopfront is the most important advertisement you have. It is what creates the public’s first impression of your business. It makes the difference between potential customers either walking past, or calling in and making a purchase!!”.
Similar projects have taken place across Ireland and the results have been fantastic. Madeleine said “I would encourage every retail premises to take part in this scheme – it is affordable and will make such a difference to the overall appearance of our town.”

As part of National Biodiversity Week, girls from Clonard Girl Guides, were in Redmond Park this beautiful sunny Saturday morning ( May 25th ) where they met Cliona Connolly, Environment Officer with Wexford County Council, and volunteers from Wexford Tidy Towns.
Cliona shared her vast knowledge of biodiversity with them and showed them how to build an Ant Hotel, plant seeds in diverse places, and many other related activities. I think it’s safe to say that a new generation of biodiversity-aware citizens will be continuing the good work in years to come.

At our recent, and very successful, cleanup in The Rocks, where we were joined by a large and enthusiastic group of volunteers from St. Mary’s GAA Football Club, and removed over 250 bags of rubbish plus an array of household and other appliances, we were joined by Film-makers “Highwind Films” who recorded the cleanup as it happened, and interviewed some of the volunteers. Check out their video below:
