Action Days May 2015

Over the next few weeks we need to keep our town as clean and tidy as possible in advance of the Tidy Towns Judges Adjudication. Join our volunteers who are out three times a week Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday taking actions to improve our town. Wednesdays we meet in the Bullring and Thursdays by the Nicky Rackard statue in Selskar for one hour. All equipment is supplied. Our big Action Event every week is on Saturday at 10am for about one and a half hours. Just send us a message or check out Facebook, Twitter or the website here and we will let you know when and where we will be meeting next. If you could join us for one of these meetups it would really help us tidy and improve the town.

Recently we joined forces with the Inland Waterways on Saturday 16th May and had a lovely morning cleanup on Kaat Strand. Our volunteers were all litter-picking as there was a large amount of rubbish washed up, mostly plastic bottles and plastic bags, there was also a lot of dumping. On Saturday 23rd we met at the tourist office on the Quay to paint and clean on the Crescent Quay. We met there again on Saturday 30th to finish off the painting. We also had a group out at Woodies roundabout picking up litter on the 30th. We will be moving on to paint Fettit’s Lane now during our evening cleanups. Next Saturday June 6th we will be painting the old cinema across from Dunnes, we need anyone who is willing to paint for an hour or two, if you can help please message me as I need to know how many brushes etc we need.

Thank you to all the volunteers who joined us at our Action Days. We also want to say a big thank you to Michael Hayes and his staff at O’ Briens Sandwich bar on Main Street, who looks after the Tidy Towns volunteers, every week we are on the town we really enjoy the tea/coffee and chat afterwards.

Donations for Wexford Flowering

We would like to say a big thank you to several local businesses for their recent donations to help flower up our town with Wexford Tidy Towns and Wexford in Bloom. Without their help our town would not be as bright and colourful as it will be now this Summer. DoneDeal who for the second year in a row have donated €500 to Wexford in Bloom to flower up the Bullring. Wexford Credit Union has also donated €500 which will go towards flowering up the shrine in Drinagh and Iberius Church location. Pettitt’s SuperValu has also donated €200 towards flowering up Peter’s Square. Thank you everyone for your donations, we really appreciate them, your money will be put to good use. Now the local community and visitors can look forward to colourful displays around the town this Summer. Thank you also to all the volunteers who have helped created the beds and plant the flowers. Thank you to Beechdale for supplying the flowers and advice for these fantastic flowerbeds which really enhance our towns. They are always a pleasure to work with on our projects with Wexford Tidy Towns and also with the work they do with Wexford in Bloom flowering.

Blue Info Days

Blue Info Days takes place in Wexford on Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th April 2015 with the International marine scientist group ‘Citclops’.

The first ‘Blue Info Days’ weekend in Ireland will take place on 25th and 26th April 2015 in county Wexford and consist of a mix of short talks, demonstrations and hands on trials, lots of fieldwork and fun water events. It is aimed at the general public including families and students who want to enjoy the sea and care for it, as well as those professionally engaged in the sea, monitoring and harvesting marine and coastal resources.

Costs: A 10 euro nonrefundable registration fee applies to fieldtrip bookings and 20 euro towards the Saturday party incl light meal. For those registering by April 21st the fieldtrip will include picnic or light local lunch. Registering on the day is possible if space allows but will not include lunch.

WTT Action Days for National Spring Clean

As part of the National Spring Clean Wexford Tidy Towns will be holding a series of Action Days and events throughout the month of April.

Firstly we are looking for a few volunteers to meet at 6pm in the car park beside the Opera House on Wednesday evening April the 8th to get things prepared for the following Saturday. Beginning on Saturday 11th the group will be out planting, painting and tidying up on William Street and Trinity Street and heading out towards Rosslare to Kerlogue. Another team of volunteers will be planting a new bed at Carcur as well as doing some general tidying in that area. The meeting place will be at Aspels on The Crescent at 10.00am. The more volunteers we have the more that we can get done. As usual all tools and equipment will be provided as well as protective clothing. The event will last up to 2 hours and volunteers will gather afterwards for tea and coffee and a chat.

From Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th April Wexford Tidy Towns will begin weekly intensive cleaning and maintenance at two sites in Wexford town. Every Wednesday evening at 6.00pm we will be focusing on The Bullring and outside the AIB and St Iberius Church. On Thursdays we will work at Selskar Square, Selskar Street and Well Lane to Selskar Abbey. These concentrated cleaning sessions will ensure that these three key areas in the town are kept to a very high standard. We will be working with local businesses and residents to ensure that the centre of our town is cleaned to the highest standard. We will also be meeting up on Saturday 18th and Saturday 25th to do some flower bed planting around the town.

These intensive cleaning and maintenance actions will back up the fantastic work of the Gateway Programme that are so excellent at cleaning the centre of town. These action events each Wednesday and Thursday begin at 6.00pm and last about one hour (these will continue right through until the end of September). As usual all equipment and protective clothing will be provided.

Contact us by email at info@wexfordtidytowns.com if you want any more information or just turn up at any of the Action days to join us. We encourage everyone to consider giving us an hour every week to help make Wexford a cleaner, more beautiful place.

Get Involved in Spring Clean Month

April is Spring Clean Month so if you and your community want to get together and clean your own area please get in contact with Wexford Tidy Towns and we will organise the gloves, bags and collection of rubbish. Wexford Tidy Towns recently had one of their regular cleanup on 21st March. Thank the 15 volunteers who came out and gathered 17 bags of rubbish from the rocks on the Quay and 1 mattress! Please recycle and dispose of your rubbish responsibly, everyone has a role to play in keeping our Town clean and beautiful.

So for Spring Clean Month if your own residents association, sports or community group or a group of family and friends know of a local area that could benefit from your help, please organise a cleanup and we will organise all the equipment you need and collection of rubbish. See what impact you can make on your own neighbourhood or community area by cleaning it up and getting involved in Spring Clean Month 2015.
